Definition of Procedure Text

Procedure text is a text that gives us orders or instructions to do something.  Usually this type of text begins with the sentence “How to…”, for example “How to make a cup of tea” or “How to operate the machine”.  Procedure Text can be found in many cookbooks and manuals.

The purpose of a procedure text 

To explain how something is made, done or used through successive steps (to show how something is made/used/done through a sequence of steps).  

Aspects of Procedure Text

There are at least two aspects that need to be understood and studied.

Text Organization of Procedure Text

  • Goal: provide information about the intent and purpose of the procedure text.  
  • Materials : provides information about the list of materials or materials needed. 
  • Steps : lists the sequence of instructions to make or operate something.

Language Features of Procedure Text

After knowing the aspects contained in Procedure Text, now let's learn about the language features.

Simple present tense 
Procedure Text must be written using Simple Present Tense. This is because in the Procedure Text there are fact sentences about the manufacture or use of something.

Command Sentences (Imperative Sentences)
Examples are heat, stir, mix, add, boil, plug in, and so on.

Connectives
Connectives are used as a liaison between one activity and another, for example first, secondly, then, after that, finally, last, and so on.

Adverbs (adverbs)
Adverbs are used to give an adverb of time, such as: in 10 minutes, for 1 hour, during the first half hour.  In addition, it can also be used to provide information on how to (manner), for example slowly, thoroughly, well, fast, and so on.

1. Imperative
Imperative sentence is a sentence that is used to make recommend, request, or instruction. Imperative sentences generally end with an exclamation but can also be ends by a period. In the usual imperative sentence procedural texts used is what functions as an instruction (instruction) and command (command). 3. Sentence Connectors for Telling Actions in Order.
Connectors are used to join groups of words, both phrases and sentence. You can use these connectors to link paragraphs to be coherent. Sentence connectors are usually written at the beginning of a sentence. Try to read and study the example paragraph below carefully.

The underlined words above are sentence connectors that used to show the sequence of an instruction or how take action.

4. Adverbs
Adverb is a word that describes a verb, adjective or adverb other. An adverb usually consists of an adjective + ly such as slowly, suddenly, strongly. Easy is not it to understand the concept above? Good. You also have to study and understand the tips in compiling procedure texts.



Tips For Writing a Great Procedural Text
  • Above all else explain what has to be done.
  • Keep everything in order.
  • List all the items that will be required to complete the task.
  • Keep your instructions short, sharp and to the point.
  • Use the correct language and terms.
  • Find or create some labeled diagrams if possible.

  • Procedural texts are always written in present tense and from a third person perspective.

How to make Scrambled Egg

Ingredients:
- 2 eggs
- Milk
- 1 teaspoon of butter
- A pinch of salt and water

Steps:
1. First, crack the eggs into a small bowl and add a pinch of salt and pepper. Whisk until all is well blended.
2. In a frying pan, add butter and let it melt.
3. Pour in the eggs and milk, and wait for around 20 seconds, do not stir it.
4. After that, fold the eggs to the center and stir it with a spatula.
5. Repeat the previous step until all the eggs are mostly cooked.
6. Remove the eggs from the heat, and continue to fold and stir the eggs for around a minute.
7. Last, lift the eggs, and put them on a serving plate. Your scrambled eggs are ready.
